Paper mills aren’t the problem. Universities are the problem. They are irretrievably broken, populated by ideological scoundrels interested in political self-aggrandizement. Honest research is for suckers. There is a reason conservative thought, in any form, has been banished from the campus. Fix academics, and science will fix itself.
Just to be clear, virtually all of these shuttered journals were part of a package bought by Elvesier from an Egyptian publisher several years back.
But yes, “publish or perish” has led to a lot of fraud and simply useless “studies”.
