Very few people understand that the US does not lead the world in military technology. Propaganda over time is a powerful force for ignorance. Even people in the highest positions understand the American military through the lens of movies like Patton and Top Gun. It seems apparent that the political and military leadership had no idea about Russia’s advanced missile and air defence systems. This despite the fact that Russia has talked openly for years about their abilities. Andrei Martyanov has written about it for over a decade. 2018 Putin told the world about Russian success in developing hypersonic vehicles and nuclear powered cruise missiles. That was about the time the CIA was working with MI6 to frame President Trump. Perhaps they missed the story because they were so busy. There are none so blind as….
I will add, and this will bother many, Russia is so far ahead in many military technologies that the US will never catch up. For example, it will probably take the US a decade to develop a hypersonic missile. On top of that they will need to manufacture and deploy them in great numbers. By that time Russia will have advanced far beyond that level. So the US will be working on technology for the next decade that is already being made obsolete by Russian scientists and engineers.
Apparently, no one will care until American military soy boys start coming home in body bags/ For now, as you imply, it’s just too comfortable to live in the world of Hollywood top gun supremacy. It will require a shift of the Overton window and when it comes it will come very fast.
