Police Warn Parents About iPhone’s New ‘NameDrop’ Feature
“With this feature enabled, anyone can place their phone next to yours (or your child’s phone) and automatically receive their contact information to include their picture, phone number, email address, and more, with a tap of your unlocked screen,”
Multiple U.S. police departments issued alerts about a new iPhone feature that allows sharing contact info and images wirelessly between two closely held devices, warning that the feature could pose a risk to children and other vulnerable individuals.
“PARENTS: Don’t forget to change these settings on your child’s phone to help keep them safe as well!”
The NameDrop option is turned on by default. In order to cancel the feature in iOS 17:

Why the need to make this so easy to do? Transferring info between phones is easy enough when you want to do so. What is the need to make unsuspecting kids and others potential targets and victims? It is almost like Apple is purposely making it easy for predators and traffickers.
I thought a feature like this existed years ago on iPhones. The phones had to be very close. My son remarked on this 3-4 years ago, describing how he used it in clubs (with known friends, or friends of friends).
But using it to snag info without the knowledge of the other person is another matter.
Worthy of an IMMEDIATE class action privacy lawsuit.
‘We told you how to turn it off’ should not be a legal defence.
