33% of Democrats Might Vote for RFK Jr. as Third-Party Candidate

A quarter of Democratic voters favor Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in their party’s primary, and many would vote for Kennedy if he ran as a third-party candidate in 2024.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 57% of Likely Democratic voters would vote for President Joe Biden in the 2024 Democratic primaries, while 25% would vote for RFK Jr. Only three percent (3%) of Democrats favor author Marianne Williamson in the primaries, while seven percent (7%) would vote for some other candidate. If Biden is the Democratic presidential candidate in 2024 and Republicans nominate former President Donald Trump, while RFK Jr. runs as a third-party candidate, 33% of Democratic voters say it is likely they would vote for Kennedy, including 14% who say it’s Very Likely.

The survey of 998 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on September 14 and 17-18, 2023 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Among all Likely Voters, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is viewed favorably 49%, including 14% with a Very Favorable impression. Thirty-seven percent (37%) view Kennedy unfavorably, including 20% with a Very Unfavorable opinion. Fourteen percent (14%) are not sure.

Forty-one percent (41%) of Democrats have at least a somewhat favorable impression of RFK Jr., as do 56% of Republicans and 49% of voters not affiliated with either major party.

Twenty-five percent (25%) of all Likely Voters say that, if Kennedy were a third-party candidate against Biden and Trump in 2024, it’s at least somewhat likely they’d vote for RFK Jr., including 10% who say it’s Very Likely they’d vote for Kennedy. Fourteen percent (14%) of Republicans and 28% of unaffiliated voters say it’s at least somewhat likely they’d vote for RFK Jr. as a third-party candidate.

Among unaffiliated voters, if they vote in the 2024 Democratic primaries, only 26% would vote for Biden, while 42% would vote for Kennedy.

A majority (54%) of voters under 40 view Kennedy favorably, including 20% with a Very Favorable impression of him.

RFK Jr. is viewed at least somewhat favorably by 46% of whites, 51% of black voters and 56% of other minorities.

Interestingly, liberals like Kennedy less than other voters do. Among self-identified liberal voters, only 31% have a favorable opinion of RFK Jr., compared to 45% of moderates and 62% of conservatives.

Breaking down the electorate by income categories, 58% of voters earning between $30,000 and $50,000 a year have a favorable impression of Kennedy, compared to just 34% of those with annual incomes above $200,000.

President Biden’s strongest supporters have the lowest opinion of RFK Jr. Among voters who Strongly Approve of Biden’s job performance as president, only 23% have a favorable opinion of Kennedy. By contrast, among those who Strongly Disapprove of Biden’s performance, 62% view Kennedy favorably.

Concerns about election integrity remain high, with most voters worried that cheating could be a factor in next year’s election.

If the 2024 election proves to be a rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, many voters are open to voting for a third-party challenger.
