Counterfeit Airplane Engine Parts
Early this morning I heard the tail end of a story about problems with counterfeit airplane engine parts. I have heard about this before and am not sure how big a problem it is in terms of dollar amount and how often it may lead to engine failure and possible crashes? Some here in the industry or knowledgeable on the subject may be able to enlighten us. I wondered if this might be the type of problem that might not benefit from the use of blockchain?(presuming it isn’t already) Given that it is crucial to safety and that all engine parts probably have a serial number, couldn’t it be adopted that every mfr. would put every part on a blockchain that should lead to transparency about authenticity and also serve to make sure parts are replaced when they reached their lifespan etc. Would this not eliminate or at least greatly reduce any issues with faulty counterfeit parts and or improper levels of maintenance etc.?
I remember decades ago, nuts and bolts from China, used in planes and other equipment, were certified MIL-STD (or something similar) but were actually inferior products.
