By the way, this story isn’t about child sex trafficking. Its about older men arranging trysts with slightly underaged women. The term “underaged” is a loaded variable that we should think about a little more in order to avoid the knee jerk reaction of condemnation. I say that because the age of consent is currently as low as 12 years in a number of countries. Indeed even in Canada the age of consent was just 14 years not that long ago and where I lived for many years in Ethiopia the age was twelve. Just as it had been since the time of Christ. Age of consent is obviously a term of subjectivity depending on your culture, background and religious leaning. An older man does not instantly become a pervert just because he prefers to engage with a young woman. Especially when there has been a long tradition of older men marrying and producing families with younger ladies. These days the international ideal for the age of consent is something like 18. But why is that? Its an outcome of feminism’s restraints on family formation and their reasoning is that if women as young as 12 marry and produce children that they will suffer from a life long lack of opportunities and education since all their energy will be devoted to family. So what? What is wrong with family? A girl who is capable of producing a child is actually called a women in most traditional societies. She is not a child at all….she is a future mother.
