Despite years of progressive activism, a majority of Americans still don’t buy into the “woke” narrative that white people have a monopoly on racism.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 79% of American Adults agree with the statement, “Black people can be racist, too,” including 53% who Strongly Agree. Just 12% disagree, and another 10% are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Similarly, 72% of Americans agree, including 58% who Strongly Agree, with the statement, “It’s OK to be white” – a slogan that originated on the 4chan Internet forum and has been labeled “hate speech.” Twelve percent (12%) disagree with the “OK to be white” slogan, while 17% are not sure.
Support for “OK to be white” crosses political lines. Majorities of Democrats (51%), Republicans (73%) and those not affiliated with either major party (52%) Strongly Agree that “It’s OK to be white.”
Fewer Democrats (39%) than Republicans (67%) or the unaffiliated (53%) Strongly Agree that “Black people can be racist, too.” Still, even among Democrats, only 19% disagree with that statement.
The survey of 1,000 American Adults was conducted on February 13-15, 2023 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
Eighty-one percent (81%) of whites, 53% of blacks and 58% of other minorities at least somewhat agree with the statement “It’s OK to be white.”
Eighty-three percent (83%) of whites, 66% of blacks and 73% of other minorities at least somewhat agree with the statement “Black people can be racist, too.” Blacks are more likely than whites or other minorities to disagree with both statements.
There is not much of a “gender gap” in these findings, although men (62%) are somewhat more likely than women (54%) to Strongly Agree with “It’s OK to be white.”
Adults under 40 are less likely than their elders to Strongly Agree with either “It’s OK to be white” or “Black people can be racist, too,” although majorities of all age categories at least somewhat agree with both statements. Men under 40 are least likely to Strongly Agree with “Black people can be racist, too.”
More married Americans (64%) than their unmarried peers (51%) Strongly Agree with “It’s OK to be white.”
Breaking down opinions by income categories, those earning more than $200,000 a year are least likely to agree with either “It’s OK to be white” or “Black people can be racist, too.” Americans with annual incomes between $30,000 and $50,000 are most likely to Strongly Agree with “Black people can be racist, too.”
Among those who Strongly Agree with “Black people can be racist, too,” 75% also Strongly Agree with “It’s OK to be white.”
In communities affected by recent illegal immigration, voters believe the impact on schools, health care and employment has been mainly negative.Voters strongly prefer capitalism to socialism, and a majority would not vote for an avowed socialist.
