Precisely. Self censorship is even worse than explicit censorship, and succumbing to that would be his downfall. Whatever he himself really believes (he’s a Bernite as noted), he’s at least been willing to listen — and that’s anathema and heresy to the Left. His claim to fame was bringing onto his show the most controversial people he could find, regardless of their political stripes. He stops doing that, and he becomes irrelevant.
