Chesterton apparently was a pal of “Lord” Acton (“Power corrupts, abs power…absolutely.” Also something about great people usu being bad people.)
Anyway, about a half year ago someone at off-guardian in comments section posted that Chesterton had a book about philanthropists. He didn’t use the word psychopaths — I don’t think the word had been invented — but he described them as psychopaths, as evil. Someone commented that there may have been exceptions in history, that Drexel of Drexel U seems to have been one. In general though Chesterton’s point is that they do vicious things to get to the top or stay there, super-exploitational, and then pretend to be nice as they give out tiny bits that they often use to do nasty things indirectly or else at least stay on top.
I personally am hugely opposed to the death penalty, even for the worst of the worst (the extreme serial mass murderers and torturers), but I did recently note a quotation attributed recently to Chesterton about too few politicians being hanged.
