One day the Landlord of the Vermont rental I had rented for years, gave me a loaded 22 rifle and a box of 22LR’s. Meant for the chipmunks and squirrels eating my berries in the backyard.
Asked if I could shoot and I said yes, was trained with a 22 at Scout Camp in Michigan. I was never going to use it for that. I still got enough berries for myself.
As a Canadian, I immediately thought about unloading and where I should keep it and on second thought gave it back. Wanted me to keep it by the front door. I was a little slow on the uptake. Make sure they come through before you fire. He was serious.
Crime is low in Vermont. You likely know the person who harms you. Domestic or the odd drug related incident. I figured that open carry lessened the threat of someone robbing you. You may not survive a blast from the 85 year old lady of the house. Deterrent.
