A recent change in Canadian citizenship laws now allows millions of US citizens to have the option to be eligible to become a citizen or have a passport from its northern neighbor.

According to Newsweek, people born outside Canada before December 15, 2025, when the bill came into effect, are now eligible for citizenship if they have a Canadian parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, or even great-great-grandparent.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the Ottawa government agency that oversees the process, comments that it expects tens of thousands of applications in the following months.
