a goldballooner’s transaction in Moscow today
In trying to figure out how best to deal with money while in Russia, cash was the obvious conclusion, but something led me to also bring a few gold eagles with me. Today, I found a coin dealer in Moscow and exchanged two gold eagles for rubles. He first offered too low of a number, I gave him my price and then we settled closer to what I asked, which was an equivalent rate of $1828.56 each, cash. I did this exchange as much out of curiosity as anything.
The owner did not speak English, so I asked a few questions through my friend, including whether or not business was up or down in recent years. The answer was somewhat vague, but with a smile that I read as “up”.
Here are a few pics from the shop, which was similar to any small operation in the US:
It was cool that the owner allowed me to take photos in the shop.
Life in Moscow seems plenty normal. I’ve gotten heaps of insight from my friend here, who I had never met before arriving in Moscow. She’s not only pretty and playful, but has also been incredibly helpful. She is savvy as can be and broadly knowledgeable, far beyond the norm anywhere. We’ve had absolutely great conversations about everything under the sun. She would fit right into the Goldtent!

Very Interesting to see Commerce carrying on as usual in Russia .
Reading this submission, an idea occurred to me.
In countries where there is an artificial local currency peg to the USD by the government, would it not be best to travel with gold and go to a coin dealer where you will get the real exchange to the local currency?
Are there not many such countries in the world where we would not get shaken down by the banks?
Food for thought.

Surprised she wasn’t already a Goldtent follower.
I hear from my Russian friends that once inside Russia life simply feels normal. I used to love flights to Moscow and their market. So many things and for so cheap 20 years ago. Good people just want to do business
The cheap prices of 20 years in Moscow ago are long gone, but life inside of Russia is as your friends report. And I’ll go along with your view of good people just wanting to do business, as long as my style of business is included in the mix: monkey business!
