Oceanside property owners on Lahaina’s Front Street face dilemma: Sell to Maui County or wait to rebuild?
For the nearly 2 1/2 years since the August 2023 Lahaina wildfire burned down the Front Street building designed by her mother decades ago, Tristan Jones and her family have been unsure if they will be able to rebuild. Their property was leased out to the popular restaurant Cheeseburger in Paradise. But because it sits on the makai side of Front Street, they are facing a long, costly road of permitting and approvals.
A similar citizen trap has sprung in Los Angeles where victims of the Palisades fires are being discouraged from rebuilding. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/palisades-fire-victims-lawsuits-allowed-to-proceed/ar-AA1WGKIl?
new building codes, sewage all tougher and costly. We had Okanagan Resort burn down from the forest fires and insurance will not cover the infrastructure damage, water, power…. so strata and crap all idle. Geo tech hillside crap and on and on…..
BUT….Is the government helping or hindering — are they slow-rolling the process so that they can assume control of the land OR doing what they can to help fire victims? Commentary from Lahaina and Los Angeles suggests the former.
Tragedies occur worldwide daily — few of them involve DEW allegations (“rumoured but not yet proven”).
Trump already went to LA and told them the local government to fix the process (mucho TV coverage) — so what do citizens do when nothing changes?
agree, city hall has wet dreams of parks and crap,I think a mix of both as lots of fingers in the pie for profit.
