‘Absurd’ Poland PM Tusk trying to spin narrative of his coup
‘The man who has deployed police forces against Polish citizens is now claiming that it is the president who has chosen the path of violence.’
Poland is still in the grip of a constitutional crisis which observers are calling a coup d’état.
LSN: What else do we need to know?
Kratiuk: Donald Tusk did not return to Poland from Brussels a few years ago in order to pursue some independent vision of the Polish state. There is much to suggest that he returned as a man anointed by Europe’s political elites to carry out a specific mission: to crush the Polish right once and for all and complete the anti-Christian cultural revolution on Polish soil.
First, conservatives had to be removed from power. Then they had to be shown that, with Brussels’ full approval, they could be prosecuted, imprisoned, and politically eliminated. Finally, the time came to implement ideological demands that had resisted incorporation into Polish law for decades. This explains the attempts to liberalize abortion laws, the efforts to circumvent parliamentary arithmetic and the presidential veto, and, finally, the decision to recognize same-sex “marriages” contracted abroad. What is particularly revealing is that Brussels, which had been so deeply concerned about the rule of law under the previous Law and Justice (PiS) government, seemed to lose virtually all interest in upholding it almost overnight after Tusk’s victory. It is therefore difficult to escape the impression that the current Prime Minister is not so much pursuing an independent policy on behalf of the Polish government as he is fulfilling the political and ideological expectations of his European patrons.
And with each successive decision, he can report back to Brussels: Mission accomplished.
