NATIONAL GUARD EXPANSION: WASHINGTON, D.C. — THE BIGGER PICTURE
POLITICO is reportedly revealing that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth signed an October 29 memorandum authorizing expanded National Guard operations in Washington, D.C., including military vehicles, police vehicles and boats.
But there’s a bigger story here when we examine what has ALREADY been documented.
MORE THAN 20 STATES HAVE SENT NATIONAL GUARD PERSONNEL TO WASHINGTON, D.C.
That’s right. During the summer expansion, National Guard personnel from more than 20 states participated in the federally coordinated operation.
At its peak, the deployment approached 5,000 personnel.
And the Pentagon subsequently confirmed plans to maintain the D.C. National Guard mission through January 2029, unless ended earlier.
Now consider the additional developments:
? MARCH 2026: The D.C. National Guard activated the new 260th Special Purpose Brigade, specifically organized to coordinate military support to civilian authorities and protect critical infrastructure.
? SUMMER 2026: National Guard participation expanded to more than 20 states, with nearly 5,000 troops involved at the height of the surge.
? OCTOBER 2026: Approximately 2,950 Guard personnel remained deployed in Washington, according to reporting citing Guard figures.
? OCTOBER 29: Hegseth reportedly authorized additional vehicles, waterborne capabilities and operational support.
? NOVEMBER 5: The expanded authorization is being reported publicly, just two days after the midterm elections.
That means we are witnessing something worth examining closely: a large, federally coordinated domestic National Guard mission involving personnel from across the country.
And today’s reported authorization adds another development to that timeline.
