   President Trump’s decision to launch Operation Epic Fury against the Islamic Republic of Iran was an act of extraordinary courage and strategic genius—eliminating, in a matter of days, the world’s greatest state sponsor of terror, a regime racing toward nuclear capability, which every American president over the past twenty years promised to confront and none did.

   What I did not expect was what came next. Not from Tehran. Not from the predictable chorus of European hand-wringers or United Nations bureaucrats. What came next came from within. Within hours of the strikes, my inbox filled with messages—not from leftists, not from progressives, not from the usual anti-war crowd—but from people who identify as conservatives. The messages were filled with profanity, threats, and hatred. They accused Trump of being a puppet of Israel, a pawn of Zionists, a tool of globalist Jewish financiers who pull the strings of American foreign policy. Some told me that Jews and Israel control the world and should be eliminated. Others said that any American who supports Israel is a traitor to his own country.

   Days ago, two Israeli-American men—Lior Zeevi, forty-seven, and Daniel Levy, forty-eight, both originally from Haifa—were waiting for a table outside a restaurant at Santana Row in San Jose, California. They were speaking Hebrew to one another. Three men approached, and without provocation, began beating them. One of the attackers shouted a slur during the assault. A witness reported hearing them say “Don’t mess with Iran.” This was not an argument that escalated. This was a targeted attack on two men whose only offense was speaking their native language in an American shopping center. This is what emboldened hatred looks like. This is what happens when anti-Semitism is given permission to speak out loud.

   The permission has been granted, in part, by people who once stood as pillars of conservative thought. Tucker Carlson, once the most influential voice in right-of-center media, has descended into something unrecognizable. He has repeatedly offered an uncritical platform to well-known anti-Semites, including Nick Fuentes. He has promoted the “Khazar theory”—the discredited claim that Ashkenazi Jews are not historically connected to the land of Israel—and has suggested that Israelis should undergo genetic testing to prove their right to exist. Most recently, in response to Trump’s demand for unconditional surrender by Iran, Carlson claimed that this means American troops would be granted permission to rape and murder Iranian women and girls. This is not commentary. It is derangement. Candace Owens has gone further. Three-quarters of her recent videos mentioning Jews have been classified as anti-Semitic, featuring sweeping generalizations, accusations of Jewish supremacy, and classic tropes alleging Jewish control and manipulation. These were once serious people. They have become deranged lunatics consumed by an obsession that has swallowed their capacity for reason.

   The Left’s hostility toward Jews is, at least, intellectually consistent. The Left has always been anti-religious, because religion is the enemy of omnipotent government. Religion reminds men that they are only human—that there is one God, and it is not the state. Judaism, in particular, insists on moral accountability. It demands that individuals hold themselves responsible for their actions. It teaches that evil and sin exist within the human heart—that the environment is not the cause of suffering but that we are. This is intolerable to the progressive mind, which requires that all problems be external, structural, and solvable by policy. So, it is no surprise that the Left should hate Judaism, hate Jews, and hate the nation of Israel. But conservatives? This is bizarre and unexplainable. Conservatism has historically defended religious liberty, supported Israel as a democratic ally, and recognized the Judeo-Christian tradition as the foundation of Western civilization. The emergence of a vocal, aggressive, anti-Semitic faction within the conservative movement is not a correction or a realignment. It is a corruption.

   When I speak to people I know who oppose Israel and express hostility toward Jews, their arguments are always built on fallacies. The sources they cite are disreputable and untrustworthy. The animus they display is never rational. It is emotional, visceral, and impervious to evidence. You cannot reason a person out of a position he did not reason himself into. Anti-Semitism is not a political position. It is a spiritual sickness. It has appeared in every century, in every civilization, under every form of government. It attaches itself to whatever ideology is convenient—left or right, religious or secular, nationalist or globalist—because it does not originate in politics. It originates in the darkest corner of the human soul, the corner that needs someone to blame, someone to hate, someone to destroy to avoid confronting its own failures.

   The Iran strikes have done what great acts of moral clarity always do: They have forced people to reveal themselves. And what has been revealed, within a movement I have called home for most of my adult life, is an ugly, hateful sub-current that must be named, confronted, and disavowed. There can be no alliance with people who traffic in Jew-hatred, no matter how many correct positions they hold on other issues. Anti-Semitism is not a policy disagreement. It is a moral disqualification. History has proven, without exception, that those who come for the Jews do not stop with the Jews. They come for you next. Every civilization that has turned on its Jewish population has eventually turned on everyone else. This is not a warning. It is a pattern so consistent that to ignore it is not ignorance but willful blindness.
