Researchers identified 38 food or agriculture companies that this year dumped wastewater containing toxic compounds in amounts exceeding the limits prescribed by the EPA’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. Factory farms aren’t even required to obtain an NPDES permit, even though they release trillions of pounds of toxin-filled manure every year.
