For Canadians: instead of Alberta and Sask leaving Canada
This podcast discusses everything that Quebec does to enforce their own brand of sovereignty within Canada is perfectly legal. No other Province has asserted these rights. I never knew this.
Under the Canadian framework, apparently Provinces have more rights than US states within their Constitution. That has to be fact checked of course. I always believed that the States had control of all that was not expressly given to the Federal Govt. The US Feds don’t constitutionally have what they took over the years. Trump is fixing that to some extent and will take time.
I would rather work from within a Canadian system where my Province stands up for itself, have more control of laws and policies within the Province, than go it alone. After the Quebec Independence referendum, in 1995, there were a set of steps passed into law to allow a province to leave the Confederation. I did not know that.
Even if an Alberta referendum was overwhelmingly in favour of independence, the barrier to leaving is onerous and would take years.
Why not use the existing legal means to give the rest of Canada the finger like Quebec has done for decades?
Alberta’s Heritage Fund from oil revenues grew rapidly when initiated in the 70’s but went off the rails in the past few decades. Not sure what it is used for now. Could have been similar to Norway’s Sovereign Wealth Fund by now.
A long video an interesting debate. I favour the Quebec approach after watching, if the info is accurate.
