Tyree Smith had been found “Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity” in 2013 and sent to Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown for “up to 60 years” for the murder and cannibalism of 43-year-old Angel Gonzalez. Smith was diagnosed with schizophrenia and had been abusing drugs and alcohol at the time of the murder.
The Connecticut Psychiatric Security Review Board issued the decision to allow Smith’s release on Friday.

I am not a lawyer but having the law allow verdicts of “Not guilty by reason of insanity” is the definition of insanity. It should be Guilty by reason of insanity that mandates incarceration in a mental facility vs a prison. How many cases over probably a hundred years(whenever insanity laws were put on the books) has there been irrefutable proof of the crimes(usually horrendous murders) and they were deemed not guilty by reason of insanity. It doesn’t matter whether they knew what they were doing or why they did it, they still COMMITTED THE CRIME! There are many flaws in the legal system, this is one of the stupidest.
