To think that as a kid, our mom insisted that we collect money for UNICEF on Halloween night tours of the neighborhood instead of bags of candy.
She was duped.
Might have started out with a righteous goal. But more likely a cover/front.
I still ended up at the dentist a lot in my early years.
Ya, when I was in grade school, EVERY child was given a UNICEF box the day before Hallowe’en. We basically felt we “had to” wear the damn thing around our necks on top of our costumes, and every household kept a stash of pennies and dropped one or 2 into every kid’s box.
I personally felt that it was a pain in the ass. I mean, couldn’t we just be kids on Hallowe’en and enjoy dressing up and getting candy overload without this damn box dangling around our necks? But even at that tender age, I knew that to voice these feelings to others would surely mean that I’d be labelled bad/uncaring/lacking in social responsibility yada yada yada.

What money I put into my mouth because of eating candy when I was young would have been a good retirement by now in a simple interest bearing account.
