A remote Australian community better known for its mining history than international politics has unexpectedly found itself tied to one of the Trump administration’s biggest efforts to reduce U.S. dependence on China for critical minerals.

Fifield, a town in New South Wales with around 130 residents, is according to Express home to a scandium deposit that could become a cornerstone of America’s future aerospace and defense supply chain after Washington pledged a conditional $400 million loan to Australian miner Sunrise Energy Metals.
