A majority of voters consider America’s six-week bombing campaign against Iran a success, but also think the U.S. will eventually send ground troops to invade Iran.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 54% of Likely U.S. Voters believe the joint U.S.-Israeli military operation against Iran has been successful so far, including 29% who say it’s been Very Successful. Thirty-nine percent (39%) don’t think the Iran war has been successful so far, including 21% who consider it Not At All Successful. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
The three-night survey began before President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire late Tuesday. Fifty-nine percent (59%) of voters say it is likely that the United States will send ground troops to invade Iran, including 22% who believe it is Very Likely. Twenty-six percent (26%) don’t consider a U.S. ground invasion of Iran likely.
The survey of 1,111 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on April 6-8, 2026 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
The survey was taken immediately following the dramatic rescue of two Air Force officers after their plane had been shot down in Iran. Forty-three percent (43%) of voters say the rescue makes them more confident in the ability of the U.S. military to defeat Iran, while 13% say it makes them less confident in the military. Forty percent (40%) say the success of the rescue mission does not make much difference in their confidence in the military’s ability to defeat Iran.
The Iran war has highlighted the role of Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. Forty-two percent (42%) of voters view Hegseth favorably – up slightly from 39% a year ago – including 26% with a Very Favorable impression. Thirty-seven percent (37%) now view Hegseth unfavorably, including 29% with a Very Unfavorable opinion, and 21% are not sure.
Among voters who consider the war against Iran to be Very Successful so far, 86% have a favorable opinion of Hegseth.
Sixty-four percent (64%) of Republicans have a favorable impression of Hegseth, while 50% of Democrats view him unfavorably. Among voters not affiliated with either major party, Hegseth is viewed favorably by 36% and unfavorably by 41%.
The joint U.S.-Israeli military operation against Iran is considered at least somewhat successful so far by 80% of Republicans, 32% of Democrats and 49% of unaffiliated voters.
Two-thirds (67%) of Republicans say the rescue of the two Air Force pilots makes them more confident in the ability of the U.S. military to defeat Iran, but that view is shared by just 23% of Democrats and 40% of unaffiliated voters.
Majorities of every political category – 66% of Democrats, 59% of Republicans and 54% of unaffiliated voters – consider it at least somewhat likely that the United States will send ground troops to invade Iran.
Fifty-five percent (55%) of whites, 44% of black voters, 60% of Hispanics and 41% of other minorities consider the military operation against Iran so far to be at least somewhat successful. Black voters are most likely to expect U.S. ground troops to invade Iran.
Significantly more men (59%) than women voters (47%) view the military operation against Iran as successful, and men are also more likely to have a favorable opinion of Hegseth.
Voters 65 and older are most likely to say the military operation against Iran has been Very Successful.
Breaking down the electorate by income categories, voters earning between $50,000 and $200,000 a year are most likely to consider the joint U.S.-Israeli military operation against Iran successful so far.
Among those who voted for Trump in the 2024 presidential election, 88% say the war against Iran so far has been at least somewhat successful, but just 21% of Kamala Harris voters agree.
America’s war against Iran has heightened the danger of terrorist attacks here, according to most voters.
After the Supreme Court heard arguments on birthright citizenship, a majority of voters now favor limits on the longstanding practice.
