The Supreme Court, years ago, struck down the mandatory federal sentencing guidelines because they took away the discretion of judges in imposing sentences. Based on my quick read this is what the proposed Virginia legislation does. Thus this post is inaccurate as to the effect of the pending legislation—there are still mandatory minimums—and the writer apparently was more interested in generating outrage than accurately describing what the proposal legislation will accomplish. “

Judicial discretion has recently been a BIG part of the problem.
Just this morning I read where in Ontario IIRC, a mother who neglected to watch her infant child while taking a bath allowed her to drown. Her sentence was reduced because the mother was from Jamaica and was raised under “disadvantaged” circumstances.
Ie, pampering those who commit crimes based on ideological shading and “allowances”. so FAVORITISM. DOUBLE STANDARDS, etc.
We KNOW the patterns here. This referenced post was simply rational extrapolation.
