   I always stated on this forum that a miners portfolio should be 80-90% holding quality miners like GOLD, AEM, NEM, BTG, WPM, KL, PAAS,… Companies like CDE never make any money and are just trading or speculating vehicles. Why invest in these? Both GOLD and NEM are up 200% since 2016 bottom and 60-80% since 2018 bottom. Normally gold miners advance 2-2.5% for every 1% in gold. If you want more leverage, choose companies like CDE, HL, IAG, EGO,… but in the end you will face big risk and volatility and underperform the GDX. Just my opinion.

       The high quality miners are volatile enough — way too volatile — for most people.

       As for the other mining companies (as opposed to explorer-developers) — fine for the speculators who know exactly what they are doing — or for gamblers who want to gamble wildly.

       Exactly as Alex33 says. FWIW I agree with his lists of companies. I hope I’m not jinxing anything, but his list of high quality miners includes nearly most of the ones I expect to hold for quite a while. If you’re going to have a core to hold on to for one reason or another (tax law for example), why play in the trash?

         Admittedly some of the higher quality miners be rough to ride. Before I came here I was noting that PAAS — an more elegant holding for Ag + Au mining — had shot up and then come back down a lot recently. Not as extreme as CDE though.
