   I had a fair amount of cash after having been selling a lot of stuff for IRS-tax related reasons (at quite a net loss I have to admit) so one of the things I bought — not enough of — was FNV.

   It’s not a company I’m particularly drawn towards but I decided to buy some stuff while selling some of the dicier holdings. What I used to pick FNV w/ TA was that in various time frames it’s been generally going up, and it’s been doing better than other companies; that no matter what moving averages I used it was tending to sit on them (I like that); and that it recently has been within not too broad Bollinger Bands. If I had more time I’d use more sophisticated techniques, but that’s a significant part of the quick and dirty stuff I use.

     – If I had been smart, knowing as I did that FNV was releasing earnings after the market close yesterday, I would have bought more yesterday. Short term daily charts showed pretty narrow Bollinger Bands and the price had been tending to sit on whatever moving averages I chose on many charts of many time frames (meaning fairly relentless tendency to rise). I think these findings are probably the cruder uneducated cousins of negative volume index in that they probably reflect stealth buying by the institutions even as many investors and speculators were selling gold-related stocks.

     – If thinking of buying I try to ask myself the question, “Would I want to sell this stock short?” In the case of FNV the answer would have been, “NO!!!” no matter which chart I was looking at, pretty much any time in recent weeks. I certainly would not have wanted to have shorted yesterday, right before the earnings announcement!
