f Nithya Raman’s lead in Los Angeles holds, about 14.4 million Americans will live under a socialist mayor, up from 9.4 million before Tuesday, and the country’s two largest cities will both be run by members of the Democratic Socialists of America. Decision Desk HQ projected Wednesday that Raman, a DSA member on the City Council, unseated Mayor Karen Bass.  The AP has not called the race.

Tuesday also sent eight DSA members to the House: six newcomers plus Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, who were re-elected. Washington, D.C., Providence and Ann Arbor elected socialist mayors, and socialists won or lead in a dozen city council races from Burbank to Providence.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, told The Washington Sun that his staff has been reviewing potential investigative opportunities but also downplayed the extent to which Democrats plan to attack businesses.

Senior congressional Democrats have been studying a 181-page dossier that identifies hundreds of executives and companies for them to investigate after they take control of the House and Senate next year.

The document, drafted by the think tank Groundwork Collaborative and reviewed by The Washington Sun, argues that the party should respond to the results of the election by aggressively probing large corporations, including the biggest tech giants, artificial intelligence labs, natural gas firms, private prisons and nursing home operators, among dozens of others.

House Democrats on the Judiciary and Oversight committees have been reviewing the document, according to multiple sources familiar with the lawmakers’ private strategizing. The roadmap is the opening salvo in a broader struggle within the party over how aggressively to wield the investigatory powers that come with having the majority.

Jobless claims just fell to 189,000, the lowest level since 1969. You have to go back 57 years to find a better number. We’re now filing fewer unemployment claims in a normal week than we did in the single best week of 2019, before the pandemic.

The four-week average is down more than 13% from a year ago. People are working. The firing has basically stopped.

And groceries? Food inflation is running at 1.8%, below the 20-year average of 2.6%. Your grocery bill is climbing slower than it normally does.

So the labor market is the strongest in half a century and food is calmer than the 20-year norm.

And on Tuesday, voters turned around and punished the party in charge over the economy.

It’s odd. You can put up the best jobs numbers since 1969 and still lose the room.

Back in March, WeHo City Council voted unanimously to advance a plan allowing multi-partner partnerships to be legally recognized, according to the Los Angeles Times.

In the meantime, the council outlawed discrimination against polyamorous people and others in nontraditional family structures, such as multigenerational immigrant households. The anti-discrimination law, which adds family or relationship structure as a protected class in the city alongside race, religion, gender and other categories, was finalized Monday and will go into effect in mid-April.

Russia will not be drawn into an arms race with Europe and is instead pushing for a new security agreement, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

Speaking at the Fourth Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security on Tuesday, Lavrov warned against further confrontation and urged European nations to reconsider their approach to relations with Moscow.

Washington is now set to expand its military footprint on the Danish-owned Arctic island

Greenland’s parliament ratified on Tuesday a security agreement reached earlier this year with US President Donald Trump, Reuters has reported. The deal, which is backed by Denmark, provides for an expansion of the US military presence on the Arctic island.

Backed by a majority of lawmakers in Greenland, the deal stipulates broadening the US military’s role on the island, paving the way for two new military bases, as well as Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ missile defense system, while reaffirming Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.
