Khandouzi warned that delay means bringing the war “onto domestic soil.”
If enforced, this could escalate tensions globally and choke a fifth of all oil traded at sea.

Iran has threatened to close the strait approximately 15 times since 1980, including during tensions in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2024, and 2025. These threats often coincided with sanctions, U.S. or Israeli actions, or regional conflicts, but no closure materialized.
