Earlier this month, the International Health Regulations (IHR) National Focal Point (NFP) for Papua New Guinea (PNG) notified the World Health Organization (WHO) of the detection of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) from stool specimens of two healthy children from Lae city in the Morobe province.

“Vaccine-derived” means the virus originally came from a strain used in oral polio vaccines (OPVs), which can sometimes mutate and regain the ability to spread and cause disease in under-immunized populations.

The alarming news comes as a peer-reviewed study published last month confirmed that 80% of oral polio vaccine recipients can shed the virus to others and that vaccine strains cause 828% more paralysis than wild polio.
