It was cultural.

He won the war. He rebuilt the state. He restored France’s sovereignty. And while he held visible power, he let the other side seize real power. He entrusted the schools, the universities, the transmission of ideas to those who wanted precisely to destroy what he was defending. He believed that France’s fate was decided at the Élysée. It was decided in the classrooms.

Seventy years later, we look at the result without filters. Magistrates think as one bloc. Professors think as one bloc. Journalists think as one bloc. Intellectuals think as one bloc. An entire country molded in the same cast, so homogeneous that it ended up confusing its mold with neutrality.

And that mold produced its monsters. The 1960s and 1970s gave birth in France to the century’s worst intellectual dead ends. A brilliant generation put all its talent at the service of a single idea: that nothing holds, that everything is constructed, that all authority is suspect, and that all truth is merely a power relation in disguise. Deconstruction did not open minds. It taught an entire elite to dissolve rather than build.

Then it went global. America imported this French Theory, ran it through its campuses, mutated it into something harder and more religious. Wokism was not born in a vacuum. It was born from our philosophers, reread by militants, industrialized by institutions. We sent the virus; they sent us back the pandemic.

But the wind is turning. Everywhere, the camp of freedom is rising again. People are fed up with being managed, corrected, reeducated by institutions that despise them. They want to build again. They want to transmit again. They want to believe in something instead of dissolving everything.

The task of the next ten years is clear. Reopen institutions to plurality instead of handing them over to a single camp. Reform those who form. Give schools back the right to transmit instead of deconstructing. Deconstruct deconstruction, not by banning it, but by beating it on its own turf—the realm of ideas—where it is actually very weak as soon as one dares to contradict it.

A reset, yes. But not the one from Davos. Not a top-down, technocratic reset that wants to own and monitor you. A bottom-up reset. The return of the real, of the builder, of transmission, of trust. The end of seventy years in which only one half of the country had the right to think out loud.

De Gaulle ceded culture thinking he was holding onto France. We won’t make that mistake again. This time, we take back culture first.

https://x.com/brivael/status/2072222040547836307

(pedro doesn’t buy the theory we imported this from France; but I appreciate the argument’s tone …one key dissent: “all authority is suspect, and that all truth [as reported, not as is] is merely a power relation in disguise” …. actually does seem quite on the mark to me!)

De Gaulle’s fundamental error was not military.
