It was perhaps only a matter of time. CNBC ran the story early this morning (2am) headlined, \u201cBrazil Supreme Court justice opens inquiry into Elon Musk, escalating dispute over misinformation.\u201d It\u2019s a cage match: Elon versus the country of Brazil.<\/p>\n
On the Lord\u2019s Day yesterday, apparently not observing the Sabbath, Brazil\u2019s enraged Supreme Court declared Elon Musk of being a \u201ccriminal instrumentality\u201d and obstructing justice by refusing to hand over identities behind certain social media profiles. They have opened a criminal investigation of the billionaire. Here\u2019s the villainous judge, Alexandre de Moraes, behind the newest lawfare operation:<\/p>\n
Nope, not creepy at all. Judge Moraes is the mastermind for a broader inquiry into so-called \u201cdigital militias,\u201d a term he came up with to describe people he accuses of \u201cspreading misinformation online\u201d to attack \u201cdemocratic institutions in Brazil.\u201d But the rest of the judge\u2019s judicial resume is even more impressive.<\/p>\n Judge Moraes was the one who declared former President Jair Bolsonaro ineligible to run for president in 2023 \u2014 for \u201cspreading false information.\u201d Democracy! declaring former President Bolsonaro ineligible to run for office in 2023 due to spreading false information. He has already ordered criminal investigations into and outlawed Telegram, for \u201cspreading disinformation\u201d and disobeying his orders to remove harmful content. More democracy!<\/p>\n Finally, and you\u2019ll love this one, Judge Moraes personally oversaw the investigations into the January 8th, 2023 attack on government buildings in Brazil\u2019s capital \u2014 which the judge calls an attempted coup. Meaning, an insurrection, but you probably already sussed that one out.<\/p>\n More. Democracy. And. Harder.<\/p>\n You see, democratic institutions are very important and must be protected. In turn, democratic institutions staff with elites like Judge Moraes protect everyday citizens\u2019 basic rights like freedom of speech. So whenever citizens\u2019 basic rights threaten the institutions, then the rights must give way, if you follow the logic. Clearly, the institutions and the elites protecting the rights are more important than the rights are themselves.<\/p>\n \u201cYou keep using that word DEMOCRACY. I do no think it means what you think it means.\u201d \u2014 Inigo Montoya (paraphrased).<\/p>\n Brazil is practically sprinting toward third-world s\u2014hole status. At which point it will catch up with the United States.<\/p>\n Musk, for his part, remains defiant.
