Facebook\u2019s parent company, Meta, knowingly allows millions of children under age 13 to use Instagram, but \u201czealously\u201d hides that fact from the public, according to a newly unredacted legal complaint filed against the company and reported by The New York Times.<\/p>\n
Although Meta received more than 1 million reports of underage users, it disabled only \u201ca fraction\u201d of the accounts and instead \u201croutinely continued to collect\u201d children\u2019s personal information \u2014 including locations and email addresses \u2014 without parental consent, the unredacted document alleges.<\/p>\n
The company also purposefully uses its technology \u201cto entice, engage, and ultimately ensnare youth and teens\u201d and publicly misrepresents its platforms as safe for youth, while concealing its own internal research showing that users experienced harms on its platforms at high rates.<\/p>\n
