However, Bill C-18 gives the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) the power to determine which news content Canadians are permitted to view.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the bill, to be considered \u201celigible\u201d for sharing, a news outlet must be \u201ca qualified Canadian journalism organization\u201d and produce \u201cnews content of public interest that is primarily focused on matters of general interest and reports of current events.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is up to the Canadian government to decide which news outlets are to be considered \u201celigible.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ill C-18 comes on the heels of the Trudeau government?passing<\/a>?Bill C-11 in April, which Senator Marc Gould explained \u201cwould amend the Broadcasting Act to modify Canada\u2019s broadcasting policy, bring into the act \u2018online undertakings\u2019 that transmit content over the internet, and change the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission\u2019s (CRTC) regulatory powers, among many other things.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bill C-11 will, in effect, force social media companies and others to promote more Canadian content but could\u00a0regulate user content as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
