In places where coronavirus restrictions proved most onerous, many decided to move. \u201cLos Angeles County lost 179,757 people in net domestic migration,\u201d The Washington Post reports, \u201cwhile New York County lost 113,642.\u201d The counties containing Manhattan and San Francisco lost the most percentagewise. The counties containing Los Angeles, Manhattan, and Chicago lost the most in terms of raw numbers. In Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, every county lost population in the July 2020 to July 2021 period covered. Los Angeles County lost 179,757 people in net domestic migration, while New York County lost 113,642. As deaths increased fertility continued to decrease, with immigration mitigating the downward population trend to such an extent that population actually increased though slightly. \u201cI think one of the most important findings is the fact that almost 2,300 counties had more deaths than births in them,\u201d University of New Hampshire demographer Kenneth M. Johnston told the Post. \u201cThat\u2019s unheard of in American history.\u201d<\/p>\n
