In scenes akin to a war zone, residents of the city’s poorest northern neighbourhoods scrambled for cover as 2,500 armed officers engaged in an exchange of fire with Comando Vermelho, or Red Command, one of Brazil’s most powerful crime groups.

64 people killed, more than 80 arrested and 12 hours of gunfire.
