Nuclear fusion used to transmute Mercury into Gold. The resulting Gold would be radioactive for up to 17 years.
The radioactive aspect may not be a factor as most bullion is stored anyway.

Sounds more theoretical than practical but imagine if this was true.
A great way for countries to acquire Gold that is held on their balance sheet. Not for immediate distribution.

My guess is nothing comes of it.
